Mai Ton Island (Koh Mai Ton)
Mai Ton Island, Honeymoon island, or the native here calls “Koh Mai Ton”, a tiny island of Andaman Sea on the southeast of Phuket. At Koh Mai Ton you will see a stunning sceneries of white sandy beach and the crystal clear water and beautiful fish of various kinds, such as lionfish, parrotfish, and clownfish; is make you feel like watching a circus in the ocean. Some might see dolphins show up and play with the waves. The corals here are still intact with the nature preserve as much as it can be. This place is very quiet suitable for you to relax, swim, or dive. The reason to call “Koh Mai Ton” is because, if you look at the aerial photo. The island is shaped like a wood log (Ton Mai) now if they name it “Ton Mai” island it will sound too ordinary to make the name more extraordinary they renamed to “Mai Ton Island”
You can travel to Mai Ton island from Phuket deep sea port or Panwa deep sea port. These ports are the place where all the luxury cruises dock their vessels when they bring their passengers visit Phuket. Mai Ton island looks like a long piece of log and it about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) from Phuket. Which mean it take only few minutes to travel. The island is a private island owned by Honeymoon Island Hotel. Anyone want to travel there, will need to book a room from the resort to gain permission into the island. Therefore, I’m not suggest any backpacker who want to enjoy the view and looking for guesthouse or hostel to crash for the night. So, please call Honeymoon Island Hotel, check and book the room ahead before heading there.
Since the island is private owned, very few tourists visit each time. This make the island has abundant natural beauty with the water as clear as the blue glass as well as the coral reef near the shore that flourish with anemone that stretch along as for as you can see. If you love sea creatures this is the place to be, the various school of fish are swimming around the reef like a wild flowers waving in the wind under the ocean plain. The scenery has been referred to as the Maldives of Thailand. Also, the island is the center conserve marine species of the giant clam as well as the coral reef conservation project for many years as well.
With all the rich and untouched natural resource, Mai Ton island is considering to be the diver heaven place to be. In case, if you cannot spend the night at the island, there is an option where you can travel there as a daytrip.
